Perhaps Aurora can take inspiration from Newmarket and consider reopening the transitional housing for men project on a property we already own—the $7.5 million site adjacent to Aurora Town Square. I also hope there will be a renewed willingness to collaborate with York Region to bring this important project to fruition. As many already know, earlier this year the project was vetoed by Mayor Tom Mrakas, who used his strong-mayor powers to override council’s decision to move forward with transitional housing at 14452 Yonge Street.
Transitional housing is a preventative approach that helps people before their problems become crises. It provides safe, short-term accommodation along with support, giving individuals a stable place to begin rebuilding their lives. When housing is located near key services—such as job programs, healthcare, community supports, and public transit—it becomes much easier for residents to move forward. Access to transit is especially important because it connects people to work, appointments, and daily necessities. With these supports nearby, individuals have a much better chance of getting back on their feet and becoming independent again.
Integration matters: locating transitional housing within the heart of the community helps reduce stigma, improves access to services, and supports healthier long-term outcomes for residents.
