On April 1st, 2024, both the Cenotaph and Aurora Armoury were partially illuminated in blue to commemorate the significant milestone of 100 years of Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) service. As we mark this milestone, we reflect on the bravery and dedication of the men and women who have served in the RCAF, both past and present. Their commitment to excellence and service has been instrumental in safeguarding our country and upholding our values.
Since its establishment in 1924, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) has been a cornerstone of Canadian defense, serving the nation in times of peace and war. The RCAF played a crucial role during the Second World War, emerging as the fourth-largest Allied air force. Its peak came in the late 1950s, with numerous combat squadrons stationed on the front lines of the Cold War.
In 1968, the term “Royal” was removed from the air force’s name, only to be reinstated in 2011, symbolizing a return to its prestigious roots.
