Time for Real Action, Not Just Photo Ops

In some municipalities—Newmarket in particular—action speaks louder than words. York Region has pledged $30.2 million to build 288 affordable housing units, a development that rightly made headlines in “York Region grants $30.2M to build 288 affordable housing units.

Earlier this week, another story reported: “Charity hockey tournament raises $250K in fight against local homelessness.” Unsurprisingly, Mayor Tom Mrakas was front and centre in the photo. The caption reads: “Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas and Whitchurch-Stouffville Mayor Iain Lovatt drop the ceremonial pucks at this year’s Hockey Helps the Homeless tournament in Newmarket on Dec. 12.

What stands out—and strikes as hypocritical—is that while Mayor Mrakas is prominently featured, neither he nor Aurora is mentioned in the article itself. Ironically, the photo opportunity took place in Newmarket, where real, tangible action on homelessness is actually happening.

In Aurora, this seems more like PERFORMANCE POLITICS than a commitment to real solutions. It’s disappointing that the focus remains on appearances rather than results—especially given the ongoing resistance to meaningful local initiatives.

For context, Mayor Tom Mrakas ultimately used strong mayor powers to block a transitional housing project for men in Aurora, a project he had initially supported.

This piece covers a Hockey Helps the Homeless charity tournament held in Newmarket that raised around $250,000 for local homelessness support initiatives. The event brought together community members, fundraisers, and sponsors to contribute to organizations working on homelessness solutions.

Lastly, I want to point this out. The key difference between shelters and transitional housing lies in their purpose and duration. Shelters provide short-term, immediate relief—offering a safe place to sleep and access to basic necessities for people experiencing homelessness. Transitional housing, on the other hand, provides medium-term support combined with services such as life skills training, case management, and job assistance, helping residents move toward stable, permanent housing.

This is exactly what Aurora’s mayor declined: a transitional housing project for men.
