Snapshots from the Driveway: Eerie Sky

Reflecting on yesterday’s storm and a few unforgettable ones from the past.

A powerful storm swept across Ontario yesterday, leaving a trail of damage and power outages in its wake. In Aurora, the sky before the storm looked straight out of a movie—eerie, and wicked dark clouds looming overhead, followed by a downpour that passed over quickly. It was like the storm couldn’t decide if it wanted to stay or go. But one thing’s for sure—it definitely showcased an eerie sky.

I was tempted to head out and capture the chaos on camera, but I wasn’t about to take any risks. Instead, I stayed put and snapped a few pics from the driveway. The storm got me thinking about some unforgettable ones from the past. Like the time I was driving home from work on Hwy 400 and had to pull over because the wind was so strong it was blowing everything across the highway—road signs, pylons… thankfully, nothing worse. The wind was pushing my car around, and at one point, it felt like I might end up in the ditch. I pulled over under an overpass to wait out the storm. Talk about a close call!

Then there was that wild storm back in August 2009 (I think?). We ended up stuck on Aurora Road near Hwy 404 (overpass), with the rain coming down so hard we couldn’t see the road, and the car was rattling from the wind. Traffic came to a complete standstill. It wasn’t just the super dark clouds rolling over us, but also lightning and thunder. This was the one where we thought, “Hey, why not drive right into the storm?” Not the smartest decision. When we finally made it home, the power was out—until the next morning.

And then there was the time—I can’t quite remember the year—that I was sitting at Nino D’Aversa Bakery (sadly, no longer in Aurora) watching the clouds roll in. It didn’t take long before we heard that the Glass Tiger concert at the Aurora Ribfest – (It’s all about the “Ribs, Bibs and Sauce” and music) had been cancelled due to the weather. Total bummer, and of course, the town never brought them back.

So today, it’s a beautiful day, but how did we go from 27°C yesterday to chills this morning with the temperature dropping to 1°C?

My curiosity doesn’t come with all the answers—it comes with a genuine desire to understand and to connect. At the heart of it, I care. I care about how communities grow, how conversations unfold, and how we make space for different perspectives—even when it’s uncomfortable. I don’t claim to have it all figured out. But I keep asking. I keep listening.
