First Lofts in Aurora: Wells Street Schoolhouse Lofts and a Spring Lookout

It’s bittersweet to watch all these changes unfold, but it’s also exciting to see how the town is growing and evolving. Time really does fly by, doesn’t it?

Spring in the Town of Aurora looks absolutely stunning from the top of the Wells Street Schoolhouse Lofts, previously known as Wells Street Public School. The panoramic view in every direction is breathtaking, with the landscape gradually transitioning from the vibrant spring hues to the lush green of trees surrounding the Town Park. I can only imagine how that same view will be further enriched as the season progresses, stretching all the way to Yonge Street.

The images featured here were taken on one of the last days of April in 2012, when the sky was absolutely perfect. While the photos don’t show it, I did manage to capture a small moon hanging over Town Park during the photo shoot. I didn’t even realize it was there until I noticed a spot on my lens.

It wasn’t until I read Andrew Fogliato’s article, “Back to School, This Time to Wells Street Schoolhouse Lofts,” that I discovered these lofts in Aurora are truly one-of-a-kind. These will be the only lofts of their kind in Aurora, and it seems unlikely we’ll ever see another heritage school converted into lofts like this one.

If you appreciate a sophisticated style combined with the charm of small community living, then this could be the perfect home for you. Not only will you enjoy breathtaking views from your window or balcony, but you’ll also be within walking distance of Town Park, the GO station, dining spots, and the historic downtown area.

And let’s not forget the variety of activities and events to enjoy at Town Park – from lively festivals and concerts to grabbing a fresh cup of coffee at the Aurora Farmer’s Market. This place really has it all!

It’s hard to believe it’s back-to-school time already! In just a couple of weeks, Matthew will be starting school for the first time, and it feels like just yesterday he was a little baby. I’m so thankful I took so many photos over the years. They’re a beautiful reminder of all the memories we’ve made together.

Looking through those photos also makes me reflect on how quickly Aurora is changing. Condos are sprouting up on Yonge Street, and soon there’ll be a new Target where Zellers used to be. New homes are being built near Atkinson Park, and some older buildings, like the George Browning house, are being torn down.

It’s bittersweet to watch all these changes unfold, but it’s also exciting to see how the town is growing and evolving. Time really does fly by, doesn’t it?

Trinity Anglican Church & Aurora Cultural Centre

Out of all the projects happening in the Town of Aurora, I’m most excited about the Wells Street Schoolhouse Lofts project. The old school will be preserved as a historic landmark, standing proudly in Town Park for years to come. While it may have once been a school, it’s now being given a new purpose, blending the town’s history with modern living. It’s exciting to see how the space will transform while keeping that piece of the past intact.

As I reflect on my experiences as a resident engaged in municipal politics, I find myself often swept up in the currents of past political moments. These reflections aren't just about policies or decisions but about the broader shifts in how we've navigated civic life. The sense of nostalgia isn't just for the times when things felt simpler, but for a period when political engagement seemed more direct, more personal. As someone actively involved in the shifting dynamics of municipal issues, I often find myself questioning where the passion and clarity of earlier days have disappeared—and whether today's politics can ever reclaim that same sense of purpose.
