The community FOCUS site was created in 2011 and was officially launched this year on April 29th, 2012. It is hard to believe that now almost eight months have elapsed since we went public here in the Town of Aurora, Ontario.
At this time of the year we like to take the opportunity to be thankful and to appreciate those who have been contributing to our success here at the community FOCUS. As we continue to grow we look forward to a vibrant and sustainable future. Our goal remains to provide positive ways and means to express your thoughts on local issues, history and everything else that we currently feature or have forecasted for the near future.
Looking back, we are very lucky to have our first contributor Matt Maddocks expressing his profound views on Town of Aurora politics and history. We are also very pleased to have Councillor John Abel contributing his interesting articles touching on politics and music in the Town of Aurora. In addition, we also featured a couple of comments by Evelyn Buck made during past council meetings in 2012 that were intriguing and worth sharing with a broader audience.
Since our Town Politics focus page has been an active point of focus for our Aurora community, we have decided to give our readers something more – a summary of almost every council meeting including a political cartoon – Reporting from Town Hill. We had a young artist from Aurora, named Jessica Georgiou, illustrate for us the character faces of our Mayor and Council. Politics can sometimes be intense so we like to balance by trying to get a few laughs rolling with some lighter side humour. We will continue to comment on our town’s issues as well.
We did initiate our Aurora-youth-writes project in 2012, however, to start this project we plan to lead by example. We will keep you updated as this will continue to be one of our active projects for year 2013.
Thinking ahead – we have a list of new ideas. We all know that 2013 is going to be the 150th Anniversary (Sesquicentennial) of the Town of Aurora. Town of Aurora will be celebrating and many events will mark that year in history. Since the theme for the Sesquicentennial year is supposed to be community involvement, we offered to host coverage of the 2013 events for free on our site. Unfortunately the SAC committee declined our free offer and we were more disappointed when we heard why it was declined and that the town was willing to budget $25,000 for their own web development for the year’s events. We find that a bit ironic. Nevertheless, the proposal is going to be our plan and guide now and we will have a Sesquicentennial focus page launched featuring everything about the celebrations in 2013.
Lastly, life does not revolve solely around politics, or history, or business; therefore, we will start another focus page for Aurora Parents to share their parenting stories, children’s humour and local resources. This will compliment the information we already provide on Aurora Playgrounds that many parents find very useful.
To conclude, we cannot emphasize enough how happy we are with our community project community FOCUS site here in Aurora and we are very excited about the New Year 2013. Remember this site was built for you to express yourself about our community.
Wishing you a healthy, happy and peaceful New Year in 2013.
